Walking for Health
We all know there are considerable health benefits from walking. For example fit walkers are less likely to fall and suffer injuries such as hip fractures because their bones are strengthened; less likely to sustain injury because joints have a better range of movement and muscles are more flexible; less prone to depression and anxiety; tend to be good sleepers; and are better able to control body weight.
So if you would like to improve your health come along and join the Blackwater Valley Countryside Partnership on Wednesday 28th February for a pleasant circular countryside walk of about five miles starting at the Canal Centre at Mytchett. Following mostly sandy or stony paths, the terrain is good and fairly even, but be prepared for one short steep hill followed by a steep descent, although your efforts will be rewarded with some good views towards St Michael’s Abbey in Farnborough, which was built in 1888 and is still used by Benedictine monks. Passing through a variety of rural habitats, including open fields and woodlands, the route takes in surfaced roads, a pathway alongside the railway line and returns back to the centre along the canal footpath.
Meet for a 10am start at the Canal Centre, Mytchett. SU 893 550 following the ‘Blackwater Valley Walk’ signs at the Centre. The walk should last about 2˝ hours. Please wear suitable clothing and footwear are recommended. Children under 16 must be accompanied by an adult. For more details ring 01252 331353 or visit www.blackwater-valley.org.uk.
