BV Path: Temporary Closure

Due to improvement work a section of the Blackwater Valley path which runs from Whitchurch Close to Aldershot Park will be temporarily closed. An alternative route from Pea Bridge (heading east) and Aldershot Park (heading west) has been signed - shown in blue on the map below.

We are very pleased to be able to replace the narrow and muddy section of the Blackwater Valley Path which runs alongside the river from Whitchurch Close to Aldershot Park (shown in red on the map below). Locally, this section of the path is a well-used route which links the Heron’s Wood estate to Aldershot Park and local schools. Regionally it is part of the Blackwater Valley Path long-distance route. During the winter months in particular the path’s surface became muddy and at times the path was impassable.

The Blackwater Valley Countryside Trust (BVCT) successfully applied for funding for this project from the TAG Community Fund run by Rushmoor Borough Council last year. In addition, they were able to secure a sizeable donation from a major local employer. The project has been supported by users of the Path such as the Blackwater Valley Runners, the Tongham Wood Improvement Group, and Pavilion Housing Association.

Work is currently underway to re-surface almost half a kilometre of the path with a 2.5m wide Febredex surface so that it is usable all year round and is suitable for pedestrians, cyclists and wheelchair and buggy users.

As part of the project a culvert will be installed to remove an existing sleeper bridge by Aldershot Park and remove a steep gradient. An access gate and ‘motorbike inhibitor’ will be installed where the path runs behind the crematorium from Whitchurch Close to discourage the use of the path by motor bikes but allow access by other users.

The work is scheduled to take five weeks so should be complete – weather permitting – by mid/end of July.
