July 2011 Wildlife Sightings

Sunday 10th

A juvenile Little Egret seen in the workings before later feeding along the River Blackwater.
Returning migrants in the form of one Common Sandpiper and two Green Sandpipers seen feeding in the slit pond and workings.
There has been some resident breeding success: a pair of Little Grebe feeding 3 small chicks in the only slit pond with deep water.
A pair of Mute Swans have a single growing cygnet - the first successful breeding after two failed years. 
Common Terns chicks are flying around the workings. 
Single buck Roe Deer.
Many Cinnabar Moth caterpillars feeding on Ragwort.

Sunday 10th

Two pairs of Mute Swans have bred producing 1 and 4 cygnets. During all the years I have watched this site it is the first time more than one pair have bred.
Two pairs of Great Crested Grebes have 3 and 2 chicks still small enough to be carried on their parents back.
Coot numbers are slowly increasing.
There are  Reed Warblers in every patch of reeds around the lake.
