Heathland, Heather & Highwaymen

Heather at Yateley CommonHistorically the route across Yateley Common was used by travellers trying to avoid highwaymen on the main roads.
But on Wednesday 19th July it serves as the first stretch of a circular walk organised by the Blackwater Valley Countryside Partnership. A walk that provides a perfect opportunity to see some of the contrasting habitats found around Yateley - heathland, grassland, meadows and woodland - whilst giving participants an opportunity to find out a little about the history of the area.

Did you know, for example, that Blackwater was one of the few places you could cross the River and a meeting point for West Country herders who would stop there with their livestock en route to London?

Initially the walk crosses the lowland heathland of Yateley Common, an internationally rare and declining habitat, with an opportunity to see all three types of heather that grow here. The route passes all of the ponds found on Yateley Common and will take in some of the higher ground, which commands scenic views of the surrounding countryside. When it comes to wildlife the Common is important for a number of scarce dragonflies and damselflies, including the Black Darter and Downy Emerald, supports a variety of butterflies such as the Silver Studded Blue and the Grayling and is home to birds like the Stonechat, Nightjar and Dartford Warbler.

If you would like to join the walk, should last about three hours and cover about 6½ miles, meet for a 10am start at Yateley Common gravel pit car park off the A30 near Blackwater SU 839594. Wet weather clothing and sunscreen plus suitable footwear are recommended. The going will be relatively flat, although there are some slopes, areas of uneven ground and steps. Children under 16 must be accompanied by an adult. For more details ring 01252 331353
