Birds of the Blackwater Valley
Kingfisher, Little Egret, Egyptian Goose, Teal and all three woodpeckers … all of these birds and many more have been seen in the Blackwater Valley at this time of year. So if you are interested in trying to see if you can spot them join a special guided bird walk organised by Blackwater Valley Countryside Partnership through Sandhurst Memorial Park and Shepherds Meadows on Wednesday 12th April and see how many different birds you can see.
The area, with its open meadow, hedgerows, riverside habitats and woodlands, forms part of the Blackwater Valley Site of Special Scientific Interest and there is sure to be an interesting mix of birds at this excellent time of year for migrant birds. Led by Colin Wilson the walk will cover around two miles and last about two and a half hours – depending on the weather and the birds seen. Children under 16 must be accompanied by an adult, but no dogs please. Wet weather clothing and suitable footwear are recommended for uneven ground off the main paths. A couple of stiles will be crossed.
Meet for a 9.30am start at Sandhurst Memorial Park car park off Yorktown Road Sandhurst, grid ref: SU 842613. For more details contact the Blackwater Valley Countryside Partnership on 01252 331353 or visit www.blackwater-valley.org.uk.
This walk is part of the ‘Discover the Blackwater Valley 2006 Programme’ organised by the Blackwater Valley Countryside Partnership and designed to encourage residents within the Blackwater Valley area to learn more about the countryside on their doorstep.
