Wellington is back on the horizon

Blackwater Valley Countryside Volunteers, led by the Project Wellington team have been working with Sodhexo and members of the armed forces to restore Wellington to his former glory.

Work began in January to clear encroaching scrub from  around the Wellington Statue. Rhododendron, Laurel bushes and Birch trees had grown up around the statue obscuring it from view. These have now been cut back and the shrubs will re-grow and will be maintained to ensure that Wellington remains in view. Sue Dent of the Blackwater Valley Countryside Partnership said “With great team work we have managed to achieve the first stage of the improvements to the Wellington Statue. Everyone has worked very hard on the project clearing the immediate area around the monument and it has made a huge difference to the view”.

It is hoped that their will be a noticeable difference to the condition of the statue this year, in time for the 150th anniversary celebrations of the Armed Forces. As the home of the British Army, the Wellington Statue holds a great deal of importance to those serving here in Aldershot.  A great historical figure, Wellington represents the history of Aldershot and indeed Britain. It is hoped that the restoration will draw local people to the area for recreation and also to learn more about the history of the area.
