New route for riverside path
Walkers following the Blackwater Valley Path near New Mill, Eversley will find that a short stretch has been re-routed, resulting in a more attractive and accessible route.
Previously the public footpath, which passed through fields adjacent to Ryecroft School of Equitation, became extremely wet and muddy at times causing walkers to complain that it was impassable. A local resident Mrs Elizabeth Purkis approached Hampshire County Council about moving the path so that it would be an improvement for everyone. A new route skirting the margins of the fields and passing closer to the River Blackwater was agreed.
Now work creating this new 400 metre stretch has been completed and signs showing the new route have been put in place. Rob Thompson, Rights of Way Officer with Hampshire County Council said:
“We were extremely pleased to be approached by the land owners who were keen to improve the path. The re-routed section should be much less muddy in winter and is closer to the River allowing improved views for walkers.”
This new section forms part of the Blackwater Valley Path and Sue Dent of the Blackwater Valley Countryside Partnership was also very enthusiastic about the change:
“This is a popular and well-used path and we are sure that users will appreciate the new, improved route”.
The 23-mile Blackwater Valley Path starts at Rowhill Nature Reserve in Aldershot going through to Swallowfield, where it joins the River Whitewater. A haven for wildlife the path links over 30 wildlife sites including nature reserves and Sites of Special Scientific Interest and is perfect for an afternoon stroll or a longer walk. The Blackwater Valley Countryside Partnership have a 28-page full-colour guide book of the entire path including route details and maps. Called Blackwater Valley Path it costs £2.50 plus 50p p+p from BVCP, Ash Lock Cottage, Government Road, Aldershot GU11 2PS.
