Loddon Link Walk
If you would like to discover some of the countryside, and possibly see some of the wildlife found in north-east Hampshire along its border with Berkshire, why not join a countryside walk organised by the Blackwater Valley Walkers’ Link on Thursday 28th May. With Red Kites in the area, there’s every chance you could see some of these graceful birds, that were almost hunted to extinction by the late 1700s. Following a successful reintroduction programme in the 1980s their numbers are gradually increasing.
The walk, which will cover about six miles, takes you through the countryside found around the lower reaches of the River Blackwater, a tributary of the River Loddon. It explores the area to the north of the Blackwater passing through the rich farmland around Arborfield and pleasant woodlands of Barkham Coombes. Twice crossing another tributary of the Lodden, this time Barkham Brook, it provides interesting views of Bearwood College.
Please note that although the route is mostly flat, it may be muddy and uneven in places so please wear suitable clothing and footwear. Under 16s are welcome but must be accompanied by an adult. If you would like to come along, meet for a 10am start on Thursday 28th May at the free car park 200 yards down Swallowfield Road from The Bull pub in Arborfield. Grid ref: SU 759 669.
