I Spy!
At this time of year, just before all the shrubs and bushes come into leaf, take a very close look as you walk along the Blackwater Path and you could spot one of these. Have you guessed what it is?
This incredible structure is the nest of a Long-tailed Tit and an absolute work of art. These birds are known as the architects of the animal world because of their nests which may take many weeks to build. They usually build them inthe neart of a bramble thicket, gorse bushes or any other shrub with thorns and spikes that act as protection.
The domed nests are bound with cobwebs and finished with moss and feature an entrance hole for the adults birds to enter/exit.
We have already been told of a number of these nests built into the bushes close to the path. So the next time you are out walking take a good hard look into the hedgerows to see if you can spot one.
