Highland cattle feeling at home!

At home in the snowThe Highland cattle Ruby and Kayla are really feeling at home in the snow at Snaky Lane.  They arrived in November and have been doing a great job.

Keith Boulnois of the Snaky Lane Group said “The recent snow really brings out the best in this hardy breed. When grass becomes inaccessible, they are even more effective at working their way through bramble, gorse and other scrubby plants which need to be removed from the site. Less hardy breeds would need supplementing with hay – but not the Highland!”

Ruby & Kayla are checked daily by a dedicated rota of ‘lookers’ who make sure that they are fit and well, and that they have access to water.

Because the cattle have removed so much of the rough grass from their field this should give wildflowers a much better chance to come through in the spring and summer.  The cows will leave in a few weeks and will return in the autumn to start work again!
