Collective nouns

This month for a bit of fun we thought we’d ask you to send in your favourite collective animal nouns or alternatively make up some yourself - there are entire lists elsewhere on the internet if you have the time to look!

To get started we think A Charm of Finches and An Exultation of Larks are both rather appropriate, as is A Prickle of Hedgehogs. But what could you call a group of Robins, Otters, Dragonflies or Grass snakes, come to think of it can anything think of something suitable for a group of Conservation Volunteers?

As the Coot is our emblem we’ve discovered several suggestions including A Covert, Commotion, Cove, Fleet, Flock, Pod, Rasp and Swarm. We think Commotion is most apt, but what do you think, or can you make any other suggestions? All ideas will be posted.

E-mail your suggestions to Collective nouns

We think “A Prickle of Hedgehogs” sounds great, but what do you call a group of Wigeon?

Your suggestions

We received some interesting ideas from Bob for a group of Dog walkers:
‘Foulers’, ‘Poobaggers’ and ‘K9ers’.

They got us thinking and we have come up with a couple ourselves:
‘A Stench’ or ‘A Mess of Dog walkers’. Perhaps you can think of something else.

Bob also suggested ‘A Slither of snakes’ for several snakes together - nice one Bob and many thanks for your contribution.

Thank you Mervyn for your suggestions of either ‘A wedge’  or ‘A whistle of Wigeon’. We think a whistle is very apt. Has anyone got any other ideas?

What about suitable names for Herons and Kingfishers and can anyone think of something to call a group of dog walkers?

As far as a group of Conservation Volunteers goes, so far we’ve got a ‘Chatter’, a ‘Clamour’, a ‘Congregation’ and a ‘Richness’. Which one do you think is most descriptive?
