It’s good to walk!

Members of the BV Walkers' LinkWe all know walking is good for us, but too often we need an incentive to get out in the fresh air. Now help is at hand for all residents in the Blackwater Valley catchment area, in the form of the Blackwater Valley Walkers’ Link, a walking group with a difference.

“Walking is simple and one of the easiest forms of exercise. But people often need to be motivated to go out walking on a regular basis”, explains Christine Reeves Visitor Promotions Officers at the Blackwater Valley Countryside Partnership. “The purpose of the Walkers’ Link is to encourage people to start walking and then to motivate them to keep walking by providing details of organised walks in the area on a regular basis.”

Anyone joining the Blackwater Valley Walkers’ Link will receive a monthly walks programme giving details of all the walks in the area, a special self-guided ‘Walk of the Month’, a quarterly newsletter with details of local walking groups and a special walkers’ pack containing four colourful books: Blackwater Valley Circular Walks, featuring 12 circular walks in the area; Blackwater Valley Path which provides details of the 23-mile footpath that follows the River Blackwater; and two wildlife books – one on Butterflies the other on Dragonflies – to help introduce walkers to some of the local wildlife.

Formed a year ago the group organises a monthly walk attended by a strong nucleus of regular walkers, who like the group’s friendly atmosphere. Members have also commented on the monthly programmes, finding them an invaluable source of information as they provide a quick, convenient and easy way of finding out about literally hundreds of walks. In fact finding out what’s happening on a particular day is just a matter of consulting the Link List.  Anyone can join and the annual membership costs just £15.
